The Centurion

Luke 7:1-10

When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them.He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

I love this story so much. I know many times in our lives we have difficult situations, and I’m sure that at least one person who is reading this is going through a difficult situation right now. The first reason why I love this story is because this man (the centurion) has a big heart and great faith. But the thing that ministers in my life is the reason why he is calling Jesus. He looks like an important man, he had servants and they obeyed him. He is calling Jesus to ask him to heal his servant. And at this part I’m thinking: “Wait, what?” This man is an important businessman, he should be asking for help regarding his own problems (maybe business or even family problems) and not about the healing of one of his servants. But he takes care of someone else. He was humble regardless of his title.

Maybe you are going through a difficult situation right now, and you are waiting for “your Centurion” to take an action for you. But did you think about your neighbor? God equipped you to help others, to have great faith for yours and other’s situations. Jesus was amazed at him by his faith and his servant was healed.  I know God looked at him with love because he loved others before himself. So if you have something in your heart, God knows it! Just be the tool in God’s hands to help others. Be the Centurion for someone in need. I want God to look at me and be amazed by my level of faith and I know he’s going to take care of all my prayer requests.
